Lori Bindig Yousman is a Professor in the School of Communication, Media & the Arts and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the College of Arts & Sciences at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut.
She earned her doctorate in Communication at the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she was awarded the title of University Fellow. Dr. Bindig Yousman also holds a BA in American Studies, a BFA in Musical Theatre, and a MA in Communication from the University of Hartford along with an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Feminist Theory through the Department of Women’s Studies at UMass.
Dr. Bindig Yousman’s research spans a variety of fields, but primarily focuses on the intersection of media and youth culture, with an emphasis on femininity within consumer culture. Her scholarship includes critical analyses of popular teen television programs as well as the design and implementation of a media literacy intervention for eating disorder treatment.
Dr. Bindig Yousman has published her research as monographs with Lexington Books as well as in Routledge, Pearson, and Greenwood anthologies. She is a co-editor of the award-winning fifth edition and best-selling sixth edition of Gender, Race, and Class in Media published by Sage. She has presented at regional, national, and international conferences and received popular media coverage for her work.
Dr. Bindig Yousman has served in a number of administrative roles at Sacred Heart. Within the School of Communication, Media and the Arts, she served as the Chair of the Department of Communication Studies, Director of the MA in Communication, and the Director of the Academic Performing Arts program, which included the Theatre Arts major, Theatre Arts minor, and Dance minor.
Currently, Dr. Bindig Yousman teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in strategic communication and public relations. These courses stress ethical practices and social responsibility, foster practitioner creativity across media platforms, and encourage an awareness of the industry’s cultural impact. She also teaches courses in gender, media literacy, and popular culture, which explore the underlying ideologies perpetuated throughout the media landscape and promote critical thinking and engaged citizenship. Dr. Bindig Yousman has received grants for her teaching and research.
